Pre-implantation genetic testing involves chromosomal abnormality testing on an embryo. When a woman, especially elderly women,
undergo repeated pregnancy loss, it may be due to genetic concern in the egg or sperm (aneuploidy).
Chromosome abnormalities in the embryo will either prevent conception or cause a miscarriage. Numerous factors, including the
couple’s age and medical history, can influence the percentage of defective embryos.
Before transferring an embryo into your uterus during IVF, PGS testing checks for any chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo
to avoid miscarriages or unsuccessful pregnancy.
Couples employ this method to prevent the transmission of genetic diseases such as thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, X-linked illnesses, etc.,
to the offspring. Therefore, after PGD is completed, these couples should be conceived through IVF.
In order to do an embryo biopsy, one cell from the embryo is removed and sent for genetic testing. PGD allows selecting an embryo free
of genetic illness before pregnancy is confirmed, preventing the need for abortion. Almost all inherited diseases for which the precise
mutation is known can be treated with PGD.
The process by which embryos are created in- vitro fertilization
with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
The culturing period for fertilized embryos is five days.
The internal cell mass from which the fetus later develops is unaffected when cells from the outer trophectoderm layer are removed. Then, the recovered embryonic cells are sent for chromosomal analysis using the microchip approach. Embryos are then frozen. Upon receiving the test results and being able to choose only healthy embryos, they are implanted into the womb.
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis helps in ruling out the risk of inheriting the chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, enhancing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
