IVF

The journey of wanting a pair of new little feet in the family, to welcoming it and enjoying the new parenthood is quite emotional. Where it’s an easy journey for some couples, but for some it comes with more wait and efforts. Around 1/6 th of couples of child-bearing age are suffering from infertility or are unable to conceive naturally. With significant advances in technology, IVF resolves various infertility concerns, proving it the most successful treatment option to help couples enjoy parenthood.

IVF is one of the most widely used assisted reproductive technologies (ART) that fertilizes healthy eggs with the sperms outside the body and then implants the fertilized egg back into the uterus of the woman helping her to experience motherhood.

What is IVF?

IVF, better known as In vitro fertilization, involves fertilizing women’s eggs with men’s sperm outside the uterus in the embryology laboratory. The technology uses the combination of medicine and surgical procedure to develop embryos (fertilized eggs) outside the body and then implant them in the women’s uterus.

When does a doctor recommend IVF treatment?

IVF technology has been around for over three decades and has proven effective. A doctor may recommend the IVF procedure for couples who have been trying to conceive for months or years without success and have exhausted all other traditional fertility treatments. There can be various reasons for choosing IVF treatment, but it is usually opted in cases of:

Disorders of the fallopian tube:

Women experiencing absent, blocked, or damaged fallopian tubes which support the ovaries to produce mature eggs for fertilization.

Endometriosis:

It is a condition that causes extreme pain and menstrual irregularity in women, affecting their fertility and chances of pregnancy.

Age:

Middle-aged women trying to conceive above the age of 40.

Sperm count:

Male partner having low sperm count or facing infertility.

Others:

Unexplained infertility

What does an IVF procedure include?

IVF includes a very simple process of collecting eggs and sperm from the couple, combining and fertilizing it in the laboratory under optimal conditions that favour fertilization, and then transfer the developed embryo to the uterus allowing it to be implanted for further growth. One has to then wait to know if the pregnancy has indeed happened successfully

There are certain risk factors associated with the IVF procedure.

For couples facing infertility concerns, IVF is found to be a boon in helping them with successful pregnancies and healthy babies. Even with a high success rate of IVF treatment, the procedure has some complications associated with it, that includes:

  1. Multiple pregnancies: Introducing multiple embryos in the uterus to increase the chances of pregnancy increases the risk of having multiple pregnancies and foetuses having low birth weight or premature delivery.
  2. Loss of pregnancy or miscarriage
  3. An egg may be implanted outside the uterus, which results in discontinuation of pregnancy.
  4. Emotional and physical stress
  5. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is caused due to injection of an HCG fertility drug used to induce ovulation(production of an egg), leading to
    swelling in the ovaries.

Most of the time IVF treatments exhibit successful results,
but certain factors may impact the success rate.

Maternal Age:

Older women, especially above 40 years may find it difficult to get pregnant using their own eggs and may require egg donors.

Cause of infertility:

Chances of IVF failure increase in women experiencing conditions like severe endometriosis.

Medical/Reproductive history:

The success rate of IVF treatment decreases with an increase in the number of IVF attempts.

Sedentary lifestyle:

Older women, especially above 40 years may find it difficult to get pregnant using their own eggs and may require egg donors.
