Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the artificial insemination procedures used to treat infertility.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment involves a procedure that places sperm directly into the woman's uterus around the ovulation time to
increase the chances of eggs getting fertilized by sperm.
Sperms move from the vagina through the cervix (the lower, narrow portion of the womb), the uterus (the womb), and up into one of the fallopian
tubes during the time of ovulation for fertilization when a woman conceives naturally. In case of infertility, the IUI technique helps place the sperm
directly into the woman's uterus, bypassing the cervix during the ovulation period. This makes the passage for sperm to the fallopian tube shorter
for fertilization, thus enhancing the chances of women getting pregnant.
Fresh or frozen semen samples are collected at the center to prepare for the procedure. Semen is then washed to segregate the highly active sperms from lower quality sperm and other non-sperm elements that can interfere with fertilization.
Because the start of the ovulation period plays an important role in carrying out the IUI procedure, it is monitored using an at-home urine ovulation predictor kit or imaging method at the infertility center. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) injections or medications may be given to promote the ovulation of one or more eggs at the right time.
A long flexible tube (catheter) passes the healthy sperm sample through the cervical opening into the uterus. The entire procedure takes only a few seconds to complete and is usually painless. The pregnancy test is then recommended to be carried out after 15 days.
Reproductive specialists at the infertility center prefer carrying out the IUI treatment in patients experiencing:
The IUI technique may prove to be the most effective procedure for couples experiencing infertility concerns and
being unable to conceive naturally even after having healthy fallopian tubes or no concerns related to sperm
quality or quantity.
IUI procedure's success rate usually varies depending on the underlying cause of infertility. Because the success
rate per cycle is only 12-20%, infertility specialists typically recommend at least 3-4 cycles of IUI treatment before
considering other options.
