Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

For couples experiencing failure in male infertility, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is one of the most efficient procedures to help in achieving
a successful pregnancy.

What is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)?

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an assisted infertility technique used with the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process to improve the chances of pregnancy. When a couple’s ability to conceive a child is affected by male infertility, the ICSI procedure is preferred.

The treatment involves introducing single sperm directly into the egg, allowing the sperm to skip various steps of fertilization. The quality of sperm picked for fertilization plays an important role in embryo development, as well as the success rate of the overall procedure.

ICSI with IVF Treatment Procedure Includes:

1. Ovulation Stimulation and Egg Retrieval:

IVF, better known as In vitro fertilization, involves fertilizing women’s eggs with men’s sperm outside the uterus in the embryology laboratory. The technology uses the combination of medicine and surgical procedure to develop embryos (fertilized eggs) outside the body and then implant them in the women’s uterus.

2. Semen Analysis:

Sperm collection is carried out on the same day of egg retrieval. Male experiencing azoospermia, retrograde ejaculation, or anejaculation may require additional procedures like microscopic testicular ejaculation to collect sperm.
Analysis of collected semen is then carried out to check for sperm volume, mobility, and quality.

3. Injecting Sperm for Embryo Development:

The fertilization process is carefully monitored in the laboratory setting. The most healthy sperm from the semen is collected using a microscopic glass needle and injected directly into the egg under a microscope for fertilization. Usually, it takes around 3-5 days for an egg to fertilize successfully and develop into a healthy embryo.

4. Embryo Transfer:

After the eggs successfully develop into embryos, they are transferred to the uterus using a thin, flexible tube through the cervix for women to conceive successfully.

When is ICSI indicated?

Reproduction specialists usually recommend including ICSI procedure in case of:

  1. Low sperm motility
  2. Low sperm count to carry out the IVF procedure
  3. The inability of sperm to attach to the egg
  4. Blockage in male reproductive part
  5. Multiple failed IVF
  6. Frozen or In-vitro matured eggs are being used swelling in the ovaries.

ICSI technique may be a boon for couples dreaming of enjoying parenthood but failing to conceive due to male infertility. Usually, 50-80% of IVF procedures clubbed with the ICSI technique are found to provide successful results.
