Preparing for IVF

Welcoming a child into their family is a desired dream of every couple. However, for couples waiting to
fulfil this dream for a long time with unsuccessful results to conceive naturally, in-vitro fertilization (IVF)
may bring a ray of hope to them.
Though the process may help you live your dream of enjoying parenthood, the experience of undergoing
the IVF process may not be easy and can affect every aspect of a couple's life. The process of conceiving
a child through IVF is quite an invasive and comprehensive process. Daily hormonal injections, frequent
ultrasounds, blood tests, and visits to IVF specialists in every IVF cycle may take a toll on a couple's
emotional, physical, and financial health.
The IVF phase can be hard, but your partner's support and understanding can help you sail through the
phase. Also, having support from dear friends or loved ones can greatly help.
Here are some tips couples can follow to get through the treatment with ease:
1
Be Supportive:
Support is what your partner expects from you the most at this time. Just like you, your partner may also be going through the anxiety and excitement of IVF. Be patient and understand that your partner may be coping with the stress differently than you.
2
Be a good listener, and empathize with your partner:
Understand it's not just you; your partner also needs your attention. Listen patiently, let them express their emotions to you, and if possible, talk to them about how things are the same for you.
3
Eat healthily:
Going through an IVF cycle can be hard, and preparing your body for it requires extra care towards its nutrition. Focus on eating a healthy, well-balanced meal. Avoiding refined grains, sugar, red meat, and other processed food is recommended. Restricting caffeine from your diet during IVF treatment is recommended to prevent adverse effects on the foetus.
4
Quit smoking:
Smoking is found to have an adverse effect on the quality of eggs and sperm, affecting conception both naturally and via IVF. It is recommended to quit smoking to increase the chances of conception.
5
Avoid alcohol consumption:
Alcohol consumption can adversely affect your fertility and lower your chances of conceiving. Also, it is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption to avoid the risk of developing deformities in the baby inside the womb.
6
Rest your body with enough sleep:
Your body must be fully rested and prepared for the IVF procedure. Sleeping 7-8 hours a day is recommended to relax your body properly. Try going to bed early and sleeping in total darkness, as it helps regulate the melatonin hormone level in the body, essential for physical and emotional wellbeing. Get your sleep cycle set to normal for at least two weeks before the procedure.
7
De-stress together:
Small 'care' gestures towards your partner can mean a lot to your partner and your relationship. Try taking some free time from your regular schedule and indulge in some we-time together. Explore some fun activities, games, outings, or maybe meet your close friends. Spend time with nature together, try yoga, meditation, or a long evening walk to refresh.
8
Talk to our counsellor:
IVF procedure can be hard on your emotional wellbeing. There may be occasions when neither you nor your partner can understand each other, or you may have doubts or worries you want to share with someone but are unable to discuss; seeking a counsellor's help may work for you. Talking to the counsellor can help you relax your mind. They will also guide you with ways to cope with your worries.
Having a child in life is a blessing and preparing to bring one needs effort from both partners. Standing together at every life stage will help you better sail through the hard times. Your physical and mental wellbeing during the IVF process can enhance your chances of having a successful pregnancy and enjoying parenthood.
